brut – New Art on Stage

brut ist eine Produktions- und Spielstätte für performative Künste in Wien und gehört seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2007 zu den prägenden Häusern der freien Performance-, Tanz- und Theaterszene. Das brut-Programm steht für Experiment und Interdisziplinarität und präsentiert die Vielfalt und Unterschiedlichkeit der freien Szene. Neben Produktionen im Theaterraum realisiert brut Wien auch ortsspezifische Projekte und legt einen Fokus auf künstlerische Schaffensprozesse, Dialog mit der Stadt, Kooperation mit benachbarten Kunstdisziplinen und theoretische Reflexionen.

Viele freie Künstler*innen aus Wien und Österreich begleitet brut seit langem als Koproduktionspartner. Zahlreiche Produktionen von brut sind internationale Koproduktionen und touren durch renommierte Festivals und Theater in Europa. Auch umgekehrt setzt brut mit internationalen Gastspielen in Wien inhaltliche Impulse, realisiert Koproduktionen mit Künstler*innen aus ganz Europa und engagiert sich in der kontinuierlichen Arbeit in EU-Netzwerken.

Seit im Jahr 2017 der Auszug aus der Hauptspielstätte im Künstlerhaus wegen Generalsanierung erfolgten musste, lag der Fokus von brut stark auf der Realisierung von Produktionen an wechselnden temporären Spielstätten und auf ortsspezifischen Projekten. Im September 2020 entschied sich die Frage nach einem neuen festen Standort für brut: Die Stadt Wien saniert das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude der ehemaligen Zentralbankzweigstelle St. Marx (Karl-Farkas-Gasse 16) im 3. Bezirk und lässt dieses zur Theaternutzung umbauen. Voraussichtlich im Herbst 2027 werden dort erste größere Bühnenproduktionen zu erleben sein. In der Zwischenzeit – von März 2021 bis Saisonende 2025/26 – nutzt brut Wien das brut nordwest, eine zwischengenutzte Industriehalle in der Nordwestbahnstraße 8–10 im 20. Wiener Gemeindebezirk, als temporäre Spielstätte. Der Baustart für die Generalsanierung des Bestandsgebäudes im 3. Bezirk erfolgt Ende September 2025. Von Herbst 2026 bis zur Eröffnung der neuen Spielstätte in der Karl-Farkas-Gasse 16 bespielt brut Wien wechselnde temporäre Orte vorrangig im 3. Bezirk, einen Container bei der Karl-Farkas-Gasse 16 und – wie aktuell auch – das studio brut in der Zieglergasse 25 im 7. Bezirk. Darüber hinaus wurden von brut Wien bereits jetzt in der Karl-Farkas-Gasse 18, 1030 Wien kleine Büroräumlichkeiten angemietet.

Seit 2015 ist Kira Kirsch als Künstlerische Leitung und Geschäftsführung und Stephanie Höltschl seit 2024 als Kaufmännische Geschäftsführerin von brut Wien bestellt. Im Jänner 2022 wurde die künstlerische Leitung von Kira Kirsch von der Stadt Wien bis Ende der Saison 2025/26 verlängert, um Kontinuität während der Planungs- und Übergangsphase an den neuen Standort in Neu Marx zu gewährleisten. Im Juni 2025 wurde von Kulturstadträtin Veronica Kaup-Hasler Tomasz Kireńczuk als zukünftiger künstlerischer Leiter bestellt, der ab Sommer 2026 übernehmen wird. Die finanzielle Hauptförderung von brut erfolgt durch die Kulturabteilung der Stadt Wien. brut ist eine gemeinnützige GmbH, die künstlerische Leitung wird von der*dem amtsführenden Wiener Kulturstadträt*in nach Empfehlung des Wiener Theatervereins bestellt.

brut – New Art on Stage

brut is a production and performance venue for the performative arts in Vienna. Since its inception in 2007, it has been among the most influential places in the independent performance, dance, and theatre scene. The brut programme stands for experimentation and interdisciplinarity as it showcases the free scene’s diverse and differential character. In addition to productions for theatre spaces, brut Wien realises site-specific projects and places an increased focus on process-oriented working, dialogues with the city, temporary performance sites, co-operation with institutions from related disciplines, and theory.

A number of independent artists from Vienna and Austria have been accompanied by brut as a co-production partner for many years. A good share of brut’s productions are international co-productions touring prestigious festivals and venues across the continent. Vice versa, brut enriches and stimulates the Vienna scene by inviting international guest performances, realising co-productions with artists from all over Europe, and committing itself to continuous engagement in EU-wide networks.

Since brut had to move out of its main venue in the Künstlerhaus in 2017 due to general renovation, its focus has been strongly on staging productions at various temporary venues and on site-specific projects. In September 2020, the question of a new permanent location for brut was resolved: the City of Vienna is renovating the building of the former central bank branch in St. Marx (Karl-Farkas-Gasse 16) in the 3rd district and converting it for theatrical use. The first major stage productions are expected to be staged there in fall 2027. In the meantime – from March 2021 until the end of the 2025/26 season – brut Wien will use brut nordwest, a temporarily used industrial hall at Nordwestbahnstraße 8–10 in Vienna’s 20th district, as a temporary venue. Construction on the complete renovation of the existing building in the 3rd district will begin at the end of September 2025. From fall 2026 until the opening of the new venue at Karl-Farkas-Gasse 16, brut Wien will perform at various temporary locations, primarily in the 3rd district, a container at Karl-Farkas-Gasse 16, and – as is currently the case – the studio brut at Zieglergasse 25 in the 7th district. In addition, brut Wien has already rented small office space at Karl-Farkas-Gasse 18, 1030 Vienna.

Kira Kirsch has been artistic director and managing director of brut Wien since 2015, and Stephanie Höltschl has been commercial managing director since 2024. In January 2022, Kira Kirsch’s artistic directorship was extended by the City of Vienna until the end of the 2025/26 season to ensure continuity during the planning and transition phase to the new location in Neu Marx. In June 2025, City Councilor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler appointed Tomasz Kireńczuk as future artistic director, who will take over in the summer of 2026.
