Erika Balsom: Retrospection and Recycling in the installation of Agnès Varda (EN)
silent green, Kuppelhalle | July 7, 2022 | 7–9 pm
Beginning in the 1990s, many artists embraced the installation form as a means of reflecting on the history of cinema. They remade, recycled, and recontextualized historical films, often with a focus on classical Hollywood. This presentation will consider Agnès Varda’s participation in this impulse, taking stock of how several of her installations revisit her own body of work, with special emphasis on Ulysse (1954/1982/2012) and her Cabane de cinéma (2006).
Erika Balsom is a reader in Film Studies at King's College London. She is the author of four books, most recently Ten Skies (2021). Together with Hila Peleg, she is the curator of the exhibition No Master Territories: Feminist Worldmaking and the Moving Image, on view this summer at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
