Mit der experimentellen Oper Mille et Une Nuits bringt der in Paris lebende iranische Choreograf Sorour Darabi mit einem aus acht Musiker*innen und Performer*innen bestehenden Ensemble sein bisher ambitioniertestes Projekt nach Wien. Darabi rückt die Ausdruckskraft von Fragilität und die emotionale Textur der trans* Stimme musikalisch ins Zentrum. Die Performance nähert sich der Faszination der Geschichten aus Tausendundeiner Nacht über Körper, Stimmen und Perspektiven, die von alten Legenden an den Rand gedrängt wurden. In dem literarischen Klassiker zögert Scheherazade die Stunde ihres Todes hinaus, indem sie jeden Abend neue Geschichten erfindet. Das Erzählen wird zur Frage des Überlebens und des Widerstands. Doch im ursprünglichen Werk ist die Figur der Scheherazade auf ein erzählerisches Werkzeug reduziert, ihre Subjektivität und ihr Begehren stehen im Schatten der erzählten Geschichten. In einem sinnlichen Sog führt Sorour Darabi durch eine lange, verheißungsvolle Nacht, in der Scheherazades Wesen sich endlich entfalten kann – als queerer Mythos, weit entfernt von den Zwängen einer heteronormativen Welt.

Sorour Darabi
ist ein iranischer transdisziplinärer Künstler, der in Paris lebt und arbeitet. In Teheran war er Mitglied der Untergrundvereinigung ICCD, bei deren Untimely-Festival seine Arbeiten präsentiert wurden, bevor er nach Frankreich zog. Seit 2016 wurden seine Projekte an zahlreichen Theatern und Festivals in Frankreich und in ganz Europa gezeigt. Im Jahr 2016 kreierte Darabi Farci.e für das Festival Montpellier Danse, 2018 folgte Savušun, 2021 Mowgli für das Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brüssel, 2021 Natural Drama für das Festival d’Automne in Paris und 2022 From the Throat to the Dawn für das Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

Paris-based Iranian choreographer Sorour Darabi presents his most ambitious project to date, the experimental opera Mille et Une Nuits, with an ensemble of eight musicians and performers. Darabi focuses on the expressiveness of fragility and the emotional texture of the trans* voice through music. The performance approaches the fascinating stories from One Thousand and One Nights through bodies, voices and perspectives that have been pushed to the margins by ancient legends. In the literary classic, Scheherazade delays the hour of her death by inventing new stories each night. Narration becomes a matter of survival and resistance. In the original work, however, the figure of Scheherazade is reduced to a narrative tool, her subjectivity and desire remain in the shadows of the stories told. Sorour Darabi draws the audience in a sensuous pull through a long, auspicious night in which Scheherazade’s being can finally self-actualise – as a queer myth, far removed from the constraints of a heteronormative world.

Sorour Darabi
is an Iranian trans-disciplinary artist working and living in Paris. He was a member of the ICCD underground association, whose Untimely festival in Tehran hosted his work before he left for France. Since 2016, his projects have been presented in numerous theatres and festivals in France and abroad.
