Die Choreografinnen Eisa Jocson und Venuri Perera stammen aus Ländern, die für den Export von Arbeitskräften in den Westen bekannt sind. In ihrem Duo beschäftigen sie sich mit der Geschichte der europäischen Hexenverfolgung und wie diese die Ausbeutung von Frauenarbeit, insbesondere der von Hausangestellten aus dem Globalen Süden, bis in die Gegenwart beeinflusst.

Auch heute noch taucht etwa immer wieder der Vorwurf der Hexerei im Kontext der Stigmatisierung von Arbeitsmigrant*innen auf. Magic Maids macht unterdrückenden Machtstrukturen den Kehraus. Die Performance als Reinigungsritual, der Besen als Erweiterung des Körpers und Tool zur Verwandlung: Er ist häusliches Reinigungsgerät wie auch Vehikel der Hexe, Symbol der Unterdrückung und des Widerstands zugleich. Scharfsinnig und entlarvend halten uns Jocson und Perera die komplexen Auswirkungen historischer Ungerechtigkeit auf moderne Arbeitspraktiken, aber auch die Kraft weiblicher Solidarität vor Augen.


Eisa Jocson
ist eine in Manila lebende philippinische Choreografin, Tänzerin und bildende Künstlerin. In ihren Stücken beschäftigt sie sich mit den Verschränkungen von Geschlecht, affektiver Arbeit, Migration und Körperlichkeit. Dabei setzt sie sich mit Poledance, Macho Dancing – einer hypermaskulinen Tanzform, die in den Schwulenbars Manilas gängig ist – oder auch Hostessenarbeit auseinander. In Princess, das 2018 im TQW zu sehen war, untersuchte sie das Ausdrucks- und Bewegungsvokabular von Disney-Figuren wie Schneewittchen, eine Rolle, die philippinischen Darsteller*innen in Vergnügungsparks verwehrt wird. Zuletzt war sie 2022 mit dem Stück Manila Zoo im TQW zu Gast.

Venuri Perera
ist eine Choreografin, Performancekünstlerin, Kuratorin und Vermittlerin aus Colombo, Sri Lanka. Ihre Solo- und kollaborativen Arbeiten befassen sich mit gewaltvollem Nationalismus, dem Patriarchat, Immigration, dem kolonialen Erbe und Klasse. Sie arbeitete mit Choreograf*innen wie Geumhyung Jeong und Natsuko Tezuka zusammen. Von 2015 bis 2020 konzipierte und kuratierte sie das Programm der Colombo Dance Platform mit Unterstützung des dortigen Goethe-Instituts. Perera engagiert sich für die Schaffung von Unterstützungsnetzwerken für die unabhängige Tanzszene in Sri Lanka. Sie ist Absolventin des DAS Theatre und lebt derzeit in Amsterdam.

Choreographers Eisa Jocson and Venuri Perera hail from countries known for exporting labour to the West. In their duo, they examine the history of European witch-hunting and how it continues to influence the exploitation of female labour, in particular that of domestic workers from the Global South, to the present day.
In the context of the stigmatisation of migrant workers, accusations of witchcraft still occur even today. Magic Maids turns the tide on oppressive power structures. The performance as a cleansing ritual, the broom as an extension of the body and a tool for transformation: it is both a domestic cleaning device and a witch’s vehicle, a symbol of oppression and resistance at the same time. Sharp-witted and revealing, Jocson and Perera remind us of the complex effects of historical injustice on modern labour practices and the power of female solidarity.


Eisa Jocson
is a visual artist and choreographer based in Manila. She came to contemporary dance through pole dance. In her pieces, she explores the entanglements of gender, affective labour, migration and corporeality. She explored the economies of pole dancing, appropriated macho dancing – a form of hypermasculine erotic dance practised primarily in Filipino gay bars – and examined the expressive and movement vocabulary of Disney characters such as Snow White, a role denied to Filipino performers in amusement parks. She regularly presents her pieces at renowned theatres and international festivals in Asia and Europe, such as Tanz im August, TPAM Yokohama, Zürcher Theaterspektakel and Frankfurter Positionen. In 2018, she received the Culture Centre of the Philippines 13 Artists Award and, in 2019, the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award.

Venuri Perera
is a choreographer, performance artist, curator and educator from Colombo. Exploring the power dynamics of visibility and opacity, she attempts to destabilise how we perceive the ‘other’. Her solo and collaborative creations deal with violent nationalism, patriarchy, immigration, colonial heritage and class and were invited to festivals/biennales/symposia across Europe, South and East Asia, the Middle East and Africa since 2008. She has closely collaborated with choreographers Geumhyung Jeong and Natsuko Tezuka. Venuri conceived and curated the projects of the Colombo Dance Platform (2015–2020, Goethe-Institut) and is committed to continuing to create support networks for the independent dance scene in Sri Lanka. A graduate of DAS Theatre, she is currently based in Amsterdam.
